What we become

Everything, including ourselves, is constantly changing. Every second, an estimated million cells die and are replaced within our bodies. Do we become someone else? Can we pinpoint when we change?

For this work, I started with a photo I took of a dead sparrow lying on the sidewalk outside of the glass building I work in. I drew a screenprint positive on mylar using the photo as reference, exposed a screen, and then printed on paper. At the end of the run, I printed on a sheet of mylar and exposed that to another screen. Again I print, pulling my final print on mylar, and again I expose the new mylar to a screen. This cycle repeats, and a game of telephone emerges. Each time, information is lost, and the image is changed. I continue this process until the image completely breaks down and disappears. What I am left with after the final print is a blank sheet of paper - when did the image cease to be a bird?

Each print was then scanned and arranged into an animation.
